Employee Free Choice Act – Media Spin

Media is confused

Big Labor is doing all it can to add to the confusion about the Employee Free Choice Act, and continuing to lie boldly about it’s impact. Unfortunately, the media are becoming complicit in the process due to their lack of understanding of the bill and the issues.

In this video clip from a news station in Minnesota, one of the few states where ads are currently being run to help educate the public about the issue, the EFCA is referred to as a “bill that was stalled in Congress last year,” lending it an aura of credibility it doesn’t deserve.

Also included is a sound bite from a local union official who completely misrepresents the current procedure of an NLRB-monitored election, calling it a “long complicated legal process.” Wow – I’ve never heard a secret ballot election described in such terms! The official also said that the EFCA has nothing to do with secret ballots. Hmmmm – has he read the law?

It is somewhat discomforting that at the end of the news report, the two commentators explain how “confusing” the issue is, and they seem to feel they have cleared it up for the viewers, when they’ve done nothing of the kind.
