It is bad enough that the proponents of the EFCA misrepresent the bill itself. What’s worse is that these same people spout “facts” designed to justify the need for such a bill, that are again bold-faced lies and do not stand the test of scrutiny. Unfortunately, because such “facts” cannot be checked at the point they are spewed from the lips of those espousing them, they become perceived by the public as “truth.”
An example of this, highlighted by Colorado State Representative Amy Stephens in a recent article, is the number of people supposedly fired by employers because of their union organizing activity. Big Labor states that 25% of employers fire one or more employees for organizing activity. Yet this “fact” comes from a polling of union organizers, and is based on no data whatsoever. According to hard data available from the National Labor Relations Board, the real number is no greater than 3%.
The only way to combat the forced perceptions that Big Labor attempt to blind Americans with is for pro-business folks to learn a few of the salient facts (based on hard data), and do everything they can to make those facts a part of the public discourse.
