The Supreme Court will review a Ninth Circuit decision that upheld forced political contributions by California public employees unionized by SEIU. On January 10, the Court will hear oral arguments from National Right to Work attorneys who represented eight California public employees in their lawsuit against SEIU local 1000 over a mandatory “special assessment” fee levied in 2005.
The funds collected were used to defeat several ballot proposals including one that revoked public employee unions’ special privilege of using forced union dues and fees for political contributions without employee consent. California government employees were given no chance to opt out of Local 1000’s political fund regardless of their political affiliation.
