A little late to the party

The AFL-CIO has decided to join the “reform the labor movement” fray. The delayed response, and even the technology (i.e. you tell us what you think, but we decide what is seen by the rest of the world) are excellent examples of what’s wrong with the AFL-CIO – it is too slow and too closed to show effective leadership. The recent Teachers Union proposal (.pdf file) makes the interesting claim that in order to be successful against Wal-Mart new, unaccountable unions need to be formed that feel less compelled to follow the law. Yeah, that’s exactly what Wal-Mart workers are looking for – secondary boycotts and wildcat strikes in their stores. I bet they’ll be lining up in droves to join up.
