On Saturday, the Connecticut legislature approved a bill to make the state the first in the country to mandate sick days. The bill covers 200,000-400,000 Connecticut hourly service workers including waitresses, fastfood workers, retail clerks, hair stylists and nursing home aides and requires workers acquire one hour of sick time for every forty hours worked. The bill applies only to businesses with 50 or more employees and exempts manufacturing companies and nonprofits, independent contractors and temporary workers. Similar bills are being pushed in Seattle and Philadelphia. San Francisco and Washington, DC already require paid sick time.
